North Coast Triathlon Club in association with Triathlon Western Australia
Is proud to announce the 5th consecutive running of the
State Aquathlon Championships at Sorrento Beach.

This event offers competitors a deceptively difficult challenge. Held on a Friday evening during January, it is almost certain that the Sea Breeze will be whipping up the Indian Ocean into a frenzy. Added to this the short nature of the course ensures that heart rates will hit maximum levels straight after the gun.

The championship race sees competitors hit the surf for a 500M swim followed by a 2.4K Run on the grassed area between Sorrento Surf Club and Hillarys Boat Harbour. Upon completeing the First run the competitors head down the beach to complete a second swim and run. Total distance covered is 1000M of swimming and 4.8Km of running.

The Grassed park area offers a superb spectator vantage point and a natural ampitheatre. Spectators can also take in the fantastic views of the Sun Setting in the Indian Ocean.

Race report - January 7th 2011
Once again the weather turned on a challenging race. A fresh sea breeze had been all day, combined with a rising swell, producing rough and choppy conditions. Race organisers decided to modify the swim course to improve safety for competitors. Competitors raced over a shortened 250M swim, but had to complete the swim twice before starting the run, therefore completing a total 1000M.

The Open Elite competitors were first to brave the water at 6.20PM with the age groupers following in staged waves afterwards. Right from the gun the racing was frantic. Halfway through the first swim Kenji Nener was leading narrowly from Paul Mackay, James Lewin and Sean O'Neill with age grouper and super fish Eric Watson right there in the mix. The womens race was equally tight in the early stages with Felicity Sheedy-Ryan and Ash Bailie leading the charge. The end of a hard and challenging race the State champions in the Western Australian State Aquathlon Championships were Kenji Nener in 37.01 minutes and Felicity Sheedy Ryan in 40.40 Minutes. Full results can be found HERE.

The Race organising committee would like to thank all competitors who turned out to brave the conditions. In particular we would like to thank the sponsors and organistions that made it possible to make this event happen. A total of 70 volunteers from Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club and North Coast Triathlon Club gave up thier friday evening freely.
